IRCTC Tatkal Ticket Booking Tips – how to book tatkal ticket

IRCTC Tatkal Booking – Tips to book confirmed IRCTC Tatkal ticket faster18

Tatkal ticket is one of the most sought after train reservation.4 These 21 “how to book a tatkal ticket” tips will help in booking confirmed tatkal ticket. Here is all the information on tatkal train ticket booking. You can find everything includingticket reservation rules, tatkaltimings & seat availability status and predictions for wait list tickets on Confirmtkt.

1. Have a fast internet connection.

When it comes to booking a Tatkal ticket, Internet connectivity and speed is one factor that we tend to ignore. Faster internet can magically convert your “maybe waitlisted” ticket into a confirmed ticket! With a high speed broad band, a 3G or 4G  mobile connection, you can book and complete the payment faster.

2. Book from a personal network.

Preferably book your tickets on your home network instead of trying to book at your work place, college or from any other shared public network because many people will be trying to book their tickets and all of them have the same parent IP address. IRCTC allows only 2 tickets to be booked from a single IP address. Apart from the first lucky 2, everyone else is destined to be disappointed.

3. Come early on IRCTC site.

Make sure your computer time is in sync with IRCTC.  Search for any train onIndianrail.gov.in and see the time at the bottom and compare against your system time. Log into your IRCTC account by around 09:55 am. Keep your session alive by periodically hitting on My Profile > Master List till 9:58. Then proceed to “Plan My Travel” Page. Fill in the journey details, choose quota as Tatkal. And the moment the IRCTC clock ticks 10:00, click submit. “The early bird catches the worm!”

4. Use a fast internet browser.

An extremely unassuming trick is to use Chrome or Mozilla as your browser as these are faster among the rest. Don’t risk your confirmed tickets to the mercy of something like Internet Explorer or Opera.

5. Power your browser with Ad Blocker.

A major proportion of the time wasted while loading the IRCTC website is not only due to load on the server, but also due to heavy components on the homepage like ads. Advertisement banners can be gotten rid of easily using ad blockers

6. Disable Images.

Images also take up a lot of bandwidth and slow down the loading process of the IRCTC website. All browsers allow users to disable images and the option is available through browser settings.

7. Create multiple accounts.

If you have only one account on IRCTC, borrow one from a friend or family. Trying to book a ticket using multiple browsers/computer in parallel always increases chances of getting a tatkal ticket using multiple accounts. DO NOT use same IRCTC login details on multiple browsers simultaneously as you will be automatically logged out from all sessions.

8. Use the IRCTC Master List.

Go to the profile tab on IRCTC and add all passenger details to the master list. You may also add their respective ID card details.

9. Auto-fill details on booking page.

You can use Magic Autofill or Tatkal Ticket Now chrome extension to fill the IRCTC reservation form with one click. You can also choose to enter all your details on IRCTC before 10 am and just press the “replan” button when you come to payment. This will ensure that IRCTC will store all your details the next time you come and it will also help chrome autosuggest some of your details.

10.Keep your ID cards handy.

You will need to enter a government accepted ID proof while booking the ticket, eg. PAN card, driving license, Aadhar card etc. Keep one of these handy so that you don’t have to dig into your wallet or purse at the last moment to enter the ID Card number

11. Know when to use REFRESH button.

There is a common misconception that you are not supposed to use Refresh or back button durng the ticket reservation process. This is partially true. Using a refresh button would save you some time, if you encounter “Service unavailable” or “Connection timed out” until the payment page of IRCTC. Once you are on the payment page, don’t even think about going anywhere near the refresh or back button.

12. Decode the CAPTCHA quickly.

Enter the captcha as quickly as possible and move on to the payment page. If the captcha is not clear enough, “Refresh Captcha” to get a new one instead of guessing it.

13. Use the IRCTC E-Wallet (UPDATE – This option is being disabled for Tatkal booking, but can be used for general quota tickets).

One can completely wipe out the time that is spent while being redirecting to the bank’s payment gateway and making payment for tickets purchased online by using the IRCTC eWallet. Money deposited in online wallet can be used to make payment from it at the time of checking out from reservation system thus avoiding the hassles of selecting any bank for internet banking or using credit/debit card.

14. Choose a faster payment gateway.

Internet Banking always has an edge over Credit, Debit or other Cash Cards because you can bypass entering the never ending card numbers and other details. SBI, HDFC and Union Bank provide Internet banking payment gateways without OTP verification and save time. ICICI bank’s payment gateway is usually a slower option.

17.Don’t make any mistakes while entering the travel or passenger details on the IRCTC reservation form. Cancellation of a misprinted tatkal ticket isn’t an easy task. No refunds are provided for confirmed tatkal tickets on cancellation.

18. Enabling auto – upgradation while booking ticket on IRCTC also increases your chances to get a ticket and if you’re lucky, you can get to travel in a higher class by paying the same fare.

19. Avoid entering phone numbers while booking. Save your correct mobile number in your profile in advance and let IRCTC auto-fill it for you.

20. The tatkal ticket timings for AC and non-AC classes has been staggered by Government of India and Ministry of Railways. The tatkal ticket booking timings for AC classes i.e 3AC, 2AC and 1AC is 10 am while that the non AC classes i.e sleeper class or sitting tickets can be booked only at 11 am under the tatkal quota. Read more on tatkal timings in the official circular.

21. Check the tatkal ticket timings i.e. exact date when the train starts from the first station. Tatkal quota opens one day in advance from the day of the start of the train. Don’t let that surprise you when the tatkal quota for the intended train opened a day prior to your booking.

ADDITIONAL TIP: You can get an OTP issued from the bank shortly before the tatkal timings and keep it unused and safe. This OTP can be directly entered when you’re actually processing the payment during the tatkal timings.
